Headshot Tips and Tricks
The goal of your headshot is to look like a confident, approachable version of yourself. When everything is simple and intentional, the focus stays exactly where it should—on you.
-
Keep it simple and timeless
Solid colors work best (avoid busy patterns, logos, or graphics)
Choose mid-tone colors (jewel tones, earth tones, muted shades)
Avoid pure white (too bright) and pure black (loses detail)
Fit is everything
Wear well-fitted clothing (not too tight, not too loose)
Make sure everything is clean and wrinkle-free
Necklines & layers
V-necks or open collars help elongate the neck
Collared shirts or blazers add a polished, professional look
Layers (jackets, cardigans, blazers) add depth and variety
Keep accessories minimal
Avoid large or distracting jewelry
Simple and subtle is best
Bring options
If possible, bring 2–3 outfit choices so we can pick what works best on camera
-
Aim for natural and polished
Go for an even skin tone rather than heavy coverage
Matte or semi-matte finishes reduce shine
Shine control
Lightly powder the forehead, nose, and chin
Eyes & brows
Neutral eye makeup works best
Defined brows help frame your face
Lips
Choose a natural shade slightly deeper than your usual lip color
Avoid overly glossy finishes
Important note
Avoid SPF-heavy products (they can cause flashback on camera)
Bring a touch-up kit
Lipstick, powder, and blotting papers are helpful during the session
-
HAIR & GROOMING
Style your hair the way you normally wear it
Make sure hair is clean and neat
If you’re getting a haircut, do it a few days before (not the same day)
For facial hair
Clean shave or neatly trimmed—avoid in-between stages
Extra details
Clean, natural nails
Moisturized skin and lips
Stay hydrated the day before
-
Get a good night’s sleep
Arrive on time and relaxed
Avoid trying anything new (products, makeup styles, etc.)
Bring water and your outfit options
